Finnish 2 CV Guild will organize a very special raid next year 2018 called Raid for Arctic Ducks. The target of this “R4AD” is to reach the northernmost part reachable by car in Europe – North Cape – Nordkapp. The Raid is due in February 2018, so we hope to have decent conditions – meaning real winter, which will make this raid some more challenging and of course can be quite an experience to any of the participants.
It’s still early days, but rough lines of the main route has already being planned by a very experienced route master Henkka Castren, known by many of you from the raids made many moons ago. What we know already is, that accommodation may be quite tricky to find for large groups at that time of a year, so we may have to narrow down the size of the group. We’ll be able to decide the size later, but we are planning on having half of the cars with 2CV friends from all over the world and the other half with members of Finnish 2CV Guild.
”R4AD” is planned to start at Saturday 3rd of February from Vuosaari -harbour in Helsinki. The daily trips will be very long ones. The route takes us along the western edge of Finnish Lapland towards Skarsvåg, Norway where according to plan the whole group should be by the 7th of February. Our ability to visit the North Cape – we only know it while there, weather permitting. Raid will be ending at 10th of February.
Participating in this arctic adventure requires minor, yet crucial changes to your 2CV. Of course the basic technical condition of your 2CV has to be good and thermal insulation needs to be improved a little bit. We are going to publish a guideline for these changes later. Here in Finland at wintertime the winter tires are mandatory. (M+S marked at the minimum) Organisers shall assist by the acquisition of the set of winter tires. It is possible to even rent a set if that’s more convenient for you.
As you probably know, in Finland the weather may vary a lot, and the temperature can sometimes reach minus 40 degrees C or even more. Conditions may change from very cold and shiny to cold wind with ice and snow and even to some plus degrees, so it is important to have warm clothing with you – layering might be a good idea. The organisers will publish some guidelines for you so that you along with your 2CV will be well prepared for the cold conditions.
